Clapmash bowl with pomegranates, grapes, and foliage, 1639

Durable tin plate with a design taken from a 17th century glazed earthenware bowl from the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum. Probably made in Southwark in London, or possibly in the Netherlands, the pomegranate decoration of the bowl was typical of the time. The unusual name 'clapmash' originates from the shape of the vessel and refers to the Dutch hat type 'klapmuts,' which has a rounded crown and a broad flat brim.
